In 1880 a fragment of marble was found in the Baptistry at Carthage on which was sculptured a symbol of four fishes in the form of a cross with a wreath in the center. After considering where it was found, the symbol may explain thus: Those to be baptized become little fishes in our Fish, Jesus Christ and have put on Christ, being baptized in Jesus the crucified.
The wreath in the center symbolizes the Eucharistic Bread; e.g. in ancient pictures one finds the fish swimming toward bread.
To the Christian it portrayed a higher truth. That is why this symbol is found on ancient Christian caskets. Christ calls His Eucharistic Body bread when He says: “If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever, and the bread that I will give is My Flesh, for the life of the world”.
