Today we celebrate the Feast of The Epiphany of the Lord. We are all familiar with the story of the three Magi and their figures are part of our nativity sets. This story reminds us that openness and humility are necessary if Christ, the Light of the world, is to dispel darkness from our lives. The Magi were “stargazers” or astrologers. It was not uncommon to believe that the birth of a great king might be signaled by a new star or astral happening in the skies. They had the openness to look beyond  themselves for knowledge and they were willing to move beyond their comfort zones to seek truth. Once they arrived at the manger, they had the faith to believe that this infant, so vulnerable and appearing so insignificant, was indeed the Lord and Light of the world. In their humility, “they prostrated themselves and did him homage.” They had the openness to follow a star and discovered the Star of the Universe and the Light of the World. They had the humility to see and adore the Divine in the vulnerable humanity of an infant. Like the Magi, we are all on a journey – a quest .  Like the Magi, we need openness to look beyond ourselves to discover the more that is God. Like the Magi, we need the humility to prostrate ourselves and give homage to the Word that became flesh. He is the One – and the only One- that can dispel all human darkness – for he is the star of the Universe and the Light and Life for the world.
